This document provides an overview of the improvements and features of Microsoft® Windows®.NET Server beta 3 release. Previously code-named “Whistler Server,” the Windows .NET Server family of products is the next generation in the Windows Server operating system series. With “Whistler Server” beta 1 and “Whistler Server” beta 2, the fundamental groundwork for management, reliability, performance, security, and Web services improvements was established. Windows .NET Server beta 3 builds on this foundation and also expands the Windows .NET Server feature library to include advanced collaboration technologies and the Microsoft .NET Framework. Further, it provides the first glimpse at the four core products of the Windows .NET Server family:
Each of these products can be customized with features and functionality to meet customers’ specific business and IT needs. Windows .NET Server evolves from the strengths of the Windows NT® legacy and is fully interoperable with Windows 2000-based servers. Businesses that deploy the Windows 2000 Server family today will be ready to easily upgrade to Windows .NET Server, and immediately benefit from improved manageability, reliability, security, performance, and integrated Web services. The Windows .NET Server Family provides a range of solutions to meet customers’ diverse needs.

Windows .NET Datacenter Server Product ActivationMicrosoft Product Activation is an anti-piracy technology designed to verify that the product is legitimately licensed. The upcoming Windows .NET Server Family uses Product Activation, including beta 3 and future pre-release versions of the Windows .NET Server Family. Customers who purchase retail packaged products or a new server from an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) will be required to activate the software. The software may be activated in the factory on a new server from an OEM. Product activation will not be required for licenses acquired by a customer through one of Microsoft’s volume licensing programs such as Open License or Select License.
